Please Love Me

From The Writings Of A Sailor

From 1976 until 1980 I was in the United States Navy.  I'm not tooting my own trumpet.  That's just the way it was.  I wasn't there to protect our nation, but if duty required it (and during those years, it didn't) I would have done whatever I could to protect our country.  The four years I spent serving in the military, with everything that happened, could probably make a hilarious book.  Yet, most of the time certainly contained no hilarity or even a touch of drama.  There is a lot of time in peacetime Navy to simply be bored.

It was because of all that downtime, that I ended up creating what I will be presenting on this blog.  FROM THE WRITINGS OF A SAILOR was a collection of short stories that I wrote while I was stationed on the USS Orion (AS-18) during the years of 1977-78.  Some of the stories, as I look at them now are pretty strange, but remember, at the time I was 18 years old and thought I was going to be the next great published author.  I sent out perhaps hundreds of solicitations to magazines and book publishers and in return received hundreds of rejections, although I did receive some nice personal comments on what were usually form letters.

These stories have sat in storage for perhaps the last 30 years and I only recently came across them while going through boxes on our latest move.  I thought I had lost them a long time ago.  Other than some family members and some shipmates, these stories have been hidden, and perhaps rightfully so from the public.  But now with the wonders of the internet, I can share them with anyone who wants to read them.

As life moved on, I attempted to go back to writing many times, and actually had a story published in a book back in the '80s.  One of these days I'll tell you about it and how it came about.  It wasn't one of these stories.
